PREPARING FOR YOUR DRIVING TEST.

Going for your driving test is a milestone in anyone's life and can be a very anxious and exciting time. Preparation for the test is fundamental in helping you pass. First things first, ensure you feel ready, by this I mean not only having completed your hours, but make sure in yourself you feel ready and confident to be driving by yourself. Driving a vehicle is a big responsibility and we want all new drivers to be safe and comfortable on the roads.

Now if you decide you are ready and would like to attempt the driving test there are a few things you can do to help prepare. I would recommend 1 or 2 driving lessons with a professional instructor close to your test. This will help with any little details you may not be doing, you can also get familiar with the local testing routes in the area you will be taking the test. If you decide not to do lessons you can still take some drives around the local area, get familiar with the main roads nearby, the back streets and the testing car parks. If you have never been into the car park where the test center is I highly recommend practicing going in and out of it, people have failed in the car parks before. Read The Guide to the Driving Test book. You can get a hard copy at a Service NSW Center or download the PDF version. It helps explain the different categories you will get marked on, helpful reminders and also explains all the different fail items.

SAFE. DRIVING. TEST. CONFIDENCE

PREPARATION

Preparation is key, think about what you will be doing on the test. Yes you are going for a drive, but think of the little things as well, below are a few examples where I see the most common errors of fail items:

  • Positioning - particular on left and right turns, remember left turns you must be left as practical, right turns be sure to start and finish in the correct position to the left of the center of the road ( as best you can), try not to cut the corners unless you have to avoid an obstacle. Remember if waiting to turn right you must keep your steering wheel straight.
  • When stopping in traffic ensure there is enough space in front - best tip for this is to clearly see the car  rear tyres on the road in front of you (1-2 car lengths).
  • Signaling - you must give sufficient warning so 25-30 meters before.  Whenever leaving a parked position you must indicate for a min of 5 secs
  • Know your head checks - do you check your blindspot? Do you know exactly where your blind spot is?  If you are moving or changing position of your car and there's a gap you must check your blindspot to the same direction before moving. Check mirrors first - indicate - blindspot head check then move straight away. Timing is important, it has to be immediately before you move, not while you move and not 5 - 10 secs before.  HEAD CHECK -  GO ! When reversing you must check both left and right blind spot before moving and while moving you must also look over your shoulder directly out the back window at least once. When 1st car at traffic lights (stopped at a red light) look left and right before driving forward when it goes green
  • Practice turning right at traffic lights that don’t have the turning arrows, get used to picking gaps and making the safe decision to turn. If you are the first car you can creep into the intersection to wait to turn right (keep steering wheel straight). Only one car can be in the middle at a time.
  • Stop Signs - remember you must completely stop before the line, feel the car stop count 3 secs and then go if safe. If you have poor visibility after you stop you can then creep over the line and stop again to get a better view.
  • Manoeuvres - Practice Practice Practice - know how to do a KerbSide park, reverse parallel park and a 3 point turn. Know the correct head checks to do with all. When completing your parks you must try to be within ½ meter of the kerb and straight

*These are a few tips to help you prepare. The more driving you do before the better you should feel during the driving test.

Preparing for your Driving Test

If taking your own car ensure it is roadworthy and clean for eg:

  • Brake lights and indicator lights all working
  • Tyres roadworthy
  • No cracks in windscreen or lights
  • Car registered

If you decide to go with the Instructor in their car book a test day pack:

  • The test day pack will include pick up and drop off
  • A warm up lesson before the driving test
  • Use of the instructor car for the test

Arrive 15 mins early at the Service NSW center you will be doing your driving test at:

  • Park in the allocated testing car parks, reverse in so it is easier to leave in a forward position
  • Testing officer will check the brake lights, indicators and general condition of car before getting into the passenger seat
  • If any questions ask the testing officer prior to starting your drive
  • Ensure seat belt is on and when leaving parked position signal 5 secs

Learner Log Book:

  • If under 25 yrs of age ensure the log book is filled in correctly and 120 hours completed with 20 hours of Night driving included. Can't use dittos “”, fill in each row in full.
  • If the log book is not completed correctly the testing officer may not take you on the driving test and ask you to come back with the book filled in correctly.
  • If you have used one of the apps to log your hours ensure it is submitted 24-48 hrs before the test.
  • All pages filled in correctly, signed and all hours added up on each page with a final total on the last page filled in.
  • The 20 learning goals at the beginning of the book all need to be signed off.
  • Declaration of completion of hours towards the back of the book to be signed by learner and supervisor driver.

During the Test:

  • In the car before driving off, the testing officer will give you a quick briefing of how the test will work, they will also let you know which Manoeuvre you will be required to complete
  • They will ask if you have any questions before the drive starts
  • They will ask if you are ready and then they will give you the first direction, throughout the test they will be giving you clear directions and instructions
  • They will let you know when they want you to do a Kerbside park and your other manoeuvre
  • There usually isn't much chatter from the testing officer during the test, so expect it to be quiet majority of the time
  • If you missed a direction you may ask them to repeat it or clarify
  • They will be filling in the test score sheet while you are driving, try no to let this distract you. They have complete this sheet, you most likely won't understand the sheet so try not to worry about what they are writing

At the end of the Test:

  • They will direct you back into an available testing car space, just drive front in when returning, this park is not marked however ensure its in the lines at least, does not have to be perfect.
  • When returning through the car park, the test is still being marked, so be sure to drive carefully and slowly.  Some car parks are busier than others and may have a lot of pedestrians, cars and crossings.
  • Once car is parked and secured you will return inside the center
  • The testing officer will ask you to take a seat while they check you score sheet and add it up, you must get 90% and above to pass with no fail items
  • They will then let you know your result
  • Hopefully you passed, but if you did not this time, you can rebook another test. You must wait 7 days to sit another test.
